Use this button to toggle between the “Legend” display, which gives the legend for those layers which are being displayed on the map; and the “Layers” display, which allows you to control which layers of information you wish to display on the map.
The legend option provides details of the colour coding system in use on the map.
The layers option lists the various themes which are available. |
| |
The tick boxes in the layers section allow you to define which themes you wish to display on the map. When you first enter the program, all of the 6 usage band layers within "ENC Coverage" (for which actual data coverage limits are shown), plus the remaining available ENCs within "Other ENC" (for which only rectangular cell limits are shown) will be automatically selected for display. The folders "ENC Coverage" , "Other ENC", and "Administrative" will already be expanded, showing the layers available in each. You can click on the yellow folder "Ocean Themes" to view the layer available inside.
You can switch each of these layers on or off independently using the tick boxes. To turn all layers within a particular folder on or off in batch, use the tick box next to the yellow folder symbol.
Please note that if you switch off the "Auto Refresh" option, you will need to click on the "Refresh Map" button each time you have changed your selection of what layers you wish to view before this change is reflected on the map (suitable for slowere dial up connections where you wish to select / deselect more than one layer at a time and only wish to refresh the screen once). If you have the "Auto Refresh" option ticked, the map refreshes automatically each time you select / deselect a layer (suitable for faster internet connections). |
| |
The circular radio buttons to the right of each tick box allow you to define which theme you wish to set as the active layer, and therefore which information is processed when using one of the selection functions described below. When you first enter the program, the “Overview” layer (i.e. small scale ENCs) will be selected as the active layer. Only one theme can be selected as active at the same time, and must also be visible on the map (i.e. the tick box is selected) before it will become active. The active layer changes immediately when you check a different radio button, and the programme will allow you to repeat certain functions (e.g. the route or area selection tools) for the new layer.
The small mouse icon to the right of the layers within the "ENC Coverage" and "Other ENC" folders allow you to swith on or off the labels (i.e. the cell names) for the ENCs within these layers.

Use this button to display a small window which allows you to move your main display area to a different location. This is useful if your area of interest requires changing the display by large distances without having to change the display scale. Within the small window, the area that you have on display in the main window is shown by a red rectangle, and moves to centre on the new location that you click on within the small window.

Use this button to magnify a particular area of interest. Use your mouse to place the cross-hair over the area you wish to zoom into and click the left mouse button. The system will centre on the cross-hair position. This process may take a few seconds to complete depending on how fast your internet connection is. Repeat the process until you have a suitable display.
Alternatively, you can use your mouse to click and drag a rectangle, and the program will zoom to this area.

Use this button to click on a cell on display which belongs to the active layer in order to see a new window which shows where you can purchase this ENC from. This works in much the same way as clicking on the URL column of the selection table within the information window (refer to the "Identify" function below)

Use this button to obtain further information about a particular ENC cell on display on the map which belongs to the active layer. Use your mouse to place the cross-hair somewhere within the limits of the ENC cell you are interested in and click the left mouse button.
The information window at the bottom of your screen will then display details of all ENCs within the active layer which cover that point you have clicked on. It will provide details of the ENC cell name, the usage band it belongs to, the cell title, a comment (for example the unit that the ENC cell belongs to for ordering purposes or where you can purchase it from), the scale of the ENC, and a link to the website of the supplier of the ENC (where appropriate). Please remember that only ENCs from the selected active layer will appear in the information window table. This button will therefore only work if the map is displaying examples of ENCs which belong to the layer which is selected as “Active”.

Use this button to define a query to select a number of ENCs from within the active layer according to your own defined criteria. This button will only work if the map is displaying the layer which is selected as “Active”.
| |
For example you may wish to have a list of cells in the "Available" layer which are in usage band 1 (“Overview”). So, in the “Field” box, select “Usage Band”; in the “Operator” box, select “=”; in the “Value” box, type in Overview (entries in this box are case-sensitive); then click the “Add to Query String” button to enter the correct instruction and then click the “Execute” button.
| |
You can also use this function to put together more complex queries with a number of different criteria processed together. Use the “And”, “Or” and “Not” buttons as appropriate to build your query.
For example, with the "Overview" layer selected, you may wish to view all GB produced ENCs which have a scale of 1.5 million. In this case, the Query String would look like:
CELL_NAME LIKE "GB*" AND SCALE = 1500000 |
| |
By clicking the “Get Samples” button, the system will find examples of acceptable entries which can be used in the “Value” box.
| |
All ENCs from the active layer which meet your defined criteria will then be listed in the new table that will appear in the information window. These ENCs will also be shown on the map in blue. At the bottom of this table, you can click on the “Zoom to these records” link and the program will reset the map so that all of the selected ENCs are displayed at the optimum scale (may result in zooming in or zooming out).
The left hand column of the table (“Rec”) provides the record number for each ENC which has been selected. By clicking on this field for the ENC which you are interested in, the program will reset the map so that this specific ENC is displayed at the optimum scale. You can then select other ENCs from the list to look at in more detail. |
| |
If your query returns more than 500 ENC records, you will see a prompt at the bottom of the table where you can scroll to the additional records.

Use this button to find a particular ENC or group of ENCs from the selected active layer by typing in a suitable text string . So if you type in “Barcelona”, the program will return any cell with the name “Barcelona” in its title. If you type in “DE516115”, the program when the "Harbour" usage band is the active layer, the programme will find this particular ENC cell.
| |
As with the “Query” function (please see notes above for further details), the ENCs which are selected by this “Find” command will be shown in blue, and the information window will list the selected ENCs in a table where you can interrogate specific entries by clicking on their record number, and zoom straight to these records on the map.

This button will only work if the map is displaying the layer which is selected as “Active”.

Use this button to calculate the distance for a given route. Use the left mouse button and click waypoints on the map. You will see in the top left of the screen the total distance, and the distance of the latest segment of the route. The route will plot on the map in red.
Once you have completed the route and calculated the distance, you can then switch to the "Select by Line / Polygon" option (see details below) to identify the ENCs in the active layer which cross the route you have defined. If you then wish to know which ENCs in a different layer cross the route, you can select the new layer you are interested in, return to "Select by Line / Polygon" option, and repeat the process. You can continue to repeat this for any layer until you remove the route from the display by either clicking on the "Restart" button within the "Select by Line / Polygon" option or clicking on the "Clear selection" option.

Use this button to create a buffer zone around one of your selections. For example if you have selected a group of ENCs from the active layer using the "Select by Rectangle" or "Select by Line / Polygon" options described below, you can set a zone around this rectangle / route of a defined size, and then list all ENCs from another layer which fall within this zone.
You must first define which layer you wish to select from the drop down menu, and then the size of the buffer zone you wish to describe. Then click on the "Create Buffer" button and you will see the zone drawn on the map with blue cross-hatch lines. If you tick the "Display attributes" box and click the "Create Buffer" button again, the ENCs from your chosen layer which fall within this zone will be listed in the information window.

Use this button to select a group of ENCs from the selected active layer which fall within a particular geographical area. Use the left mouse button to click and drag an area of your choice. The area being selected will appear in red as you drag the mouse over the map, and will become set as soon as you release the mouse button.
| |
As with the query function (please see notes above for further details), the ENCs which are selected by this command will be shown in blue, and the information window will list the selected ENCs in a table where you can interrogate specific entries by clicking on their record number, and zoom straight to these records on the map.

Use this button to select a group of ENCs which intersect a route of your choosing, or which fall within a non-rectangular area of your choosing. Use the left mouse button to click on the map the waypoints for your route (or turning points for your irregular polygon). These points will appear as red diamonds, and the program will automatically join them as you go.
| |
Use the “Delete Last Point” and “Restart” buttons to make amendments to your route / polygon. When you have finished describing your route / polygon, click on the “Complete Line & Select” button (for routes) or the “Complete Polygon & Select” button (for areas) and the program will select all ENCs from the selected active layer which the route intersects or which the area overlaps.
| |
| If you then wish to know which ENCs in a different layer cross the route, you can select the new layer you are interested in, return to "Select by Line / Polygon" option, and click on “Complete Line & Select” or “Complete Polygon & Select” button again. You can continue to repeat this for any layer until you remove the route from the display by either clicking on the "Restart" button or clicking on the "Clear selection" option. |
| |
As with the “Query” function (please see notes above for further details), the ENCs which are selected by this command will be shown in blue, and the information window will list the selected ENCs in a table where you can interrogate specific entries by clicking on their record number, and zoom straight to these records on the map.
