Charting in general, and electronic charting in particular, is a complex subject. We are asked these sorts of questions regularly.

This is no surprise given the diverse range of regulations which surround the carriage and use of charts, and the various interpretations given to these regulations. The technical jargon is also often impenetrable.

In response to this, members of the two leading ENC centres – PRIMAR-Stavanger and IC-ENC – have joined forces to create a comprehensive guide to charts and chart carriage requirements which has now been comprehensively updated.

Still written in an easy to read “question and answer” style, this guide answers over twenty of the most commonly asked questions. However, edition 2 is now split into 5 separate documents focusing on different aspects to allow you to find the information you need more easily.

The new sections are:

1 - Facts about electronic charts and carriage requirements

2 - Compendium of Flag State ECDIS Requirements

3 - Training Requirements

4 - Technical details of electronic charts

5 - Appendix: References and glossary

It is hoped that this guide will act as a useful reference document for anyone involved in the production, purchase, regulation or use of electronic charts. We will continue to keep it up-to-date, and improved upon in response to your feedback.

To download your own PDF copy of the guide, free of charge, please click on the appropriate links to the right (each file is less than 1Mb). The documents are currently available in English, Spanish and Japanese.

If you experience problems downloading or opening the PDF files, you may need to upgrade your version of Adobe Reader.
